Randy Sandlin

Born in a small North Carolina town, but living in New York City since 1988, Randy Sandlin creates art that is inspired by both his rural upbringing and his enthusiastic immersion in urban life.  He believes that “color reveals who you really are,” and his paintings are kinetic and infused with bright colors. Since childhood, it is color that has most inspired him.

After a successful career in product development and home furnishings, he began dabbling as a commercial artist but found it constraining and frustrating. Only when he allowed himself to express his own vision on canvas did he discover his true artistic voice. Strictly self-taught, he experimented with various mediums and sizes, before finding a technique that incorporated vibrant color, ample texture and such components as roofing tar, shoe polish and stain.

Most recently he has experimented with power-washing his canvases after applying layers of paper and paint. He is never sure what his final painting will look like until it appears after many applications of texture, then scratching and rubbing back. Sometimes virtually nothing of the original image remains visible in a final work.

His studio and primary residence is in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where he lives with his husband and two cats. Since 2005, he has also maintained a residence in rural Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. His paintings are in private collections in California, New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Florida and North Carolina.
